LeicaFlex SL came on the market in 1968 as a successor to LeicaFlex which was Leica's first SLR camera introduced in 1965.
One of the major improvements from LeicaFlex was that LeicaFlex SL employed TTL metering system.
On this camera, the mechanism of light metering is like this: the main mirror transmits light through the center part of it to the submirror behind, and the submirror reflects the light onto CdS cell located in the camera body bottom. In this way, built-in exposure meter has the advantage of being less affected by the incident light through the viewfinder.
Since the camera employed built-in exposure meter, the interlocking device (cam) was newly added into the camera body. And because of that, the camera needed the new type of lens (the former type of lens had to be remodeled to be attached to LeicaFlex SL). Also, Super-Angulon R f4/21mm was newly developed instead of former Super-Angulon R f3.4/21mm, for the mirror-up system was omitted on the camera.
In addition to this, LeicaFlex SL MOT was also introduced at the same time as LeicaFlex SL. This model can attach the motor drive for LeicaFlex.
